Today, industry would struggle without assistance from support workers solving problems with both computers and networks, while making recommendations to users on a regular basis each week. As we are getting progressively beholden to our PC’s, we in turn emerge as increasingly dependent on the well trained networking professionals, who maintain those systems.
It’s abundantly clear: There’s pretty much no individual job security available anymore; there’s really only market and business security – a company will let anyone go when it fits the business’ commercial requirements. Now, we only experience security via a quickly rising market, driven by work-skills shortages. This shortage creates the appropriate setting for a secure marketplace – a much more desirable situation.
The Information Technology (IT) skills shortfall across the United Kingdom is standing at approx 26 percent, according to the 2006 e-Skills survey. This shows that for every 4 jobs available across IT, there are only 3 trained people to do them. This troubling reality reveals the requirement for more appropriately certified Information Technology professionals throughout the United Kingdom. It’s unlikely if a better time or market state of affairs is ever likely to exist for acquiring training in this hugely increasing and blossoming industry.
The area most overlooked by trainees considering a training program is the concept of ‘training segmentation’. Essentially, this is the way the course is divided up for drop-shipping to you, which can make a dramatic difference to what you end up with. A release of your materials piece by piece, as you pass each exam is how things will normally arrive. This sounds sensible, but you must understand the following: Often, the staged breakdown offered by the provider doesn’t suit. You may find it a stretch to finalise all the sections within their timetable?
To be in the best situation you would have all the training materials posted to you right at the start; every single thing! Thus avoiding any future problems that could impede your capacity to get everything done.
Many training companies will provide a useful Job Placement Assistance facility, designed to steer you into your first job. It can happen though that too much is made of this feature, as it is genuinely quite straightforward for well qualified and focused men and women to secure work in the IT industry – as there is such a shortage of qualified personnel.
Advice and support about getting interviews and your CV might be provided (if it isn’t, consult one of our sites). Make sure you work on your old CV straight away – not when you’re ready to start work! Getting onto the ‘maybe’ pile of CV’s is far better than not even being known about. A decent number of junior jobs are offered to students in the early stages of their course. You’ll normally experience better performance from an independent and specialised local recruitment consultancy than any training provider’s employment division, because they will be more familiar with the area and local employers.
Just ensure you don’t invest a great deal of time on your training course, only to stop and leave it in the hands of the gods to land you a job. Take responsibility for yourself and start looking for yourself. Channel the same focus into finding your new role as you did to gain the skills.
We’re often asked why academic qualifications are now falling behind more commercial certifications? The IT sector is of the opinion that for mastery of skill sets for commercial use, the right accreditation from companies such as Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA most often has much more specialised relevance – and a fraction of the cost and time. Typically, the learning just focuses on what’s actually required. It’s slightly more broad than that, but the principle remains that students need to focus on the exact skills required (including a degree of required background) – without going into too much detail in everything else (as academia often does).
It’s a bit like the TV advert: ‘It does what it says on the label’. All an employer has to do is know what they’re looking for, and then request applicants with the correct exam numbers. Then they know that anyone who applies can do the necessary work.
